China’s DeepSeek, US’s ChatGPT: AAP MP Questions India’s AI Future in Rajya Sabha

A sharp spotlight has been cast on India’s position in the rapidly evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI), as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha raised critical questions in the Rajya Sabha. His address highlighted the significant strides made by global powers like the United States and China, while expressing concern over India’s current standing.Chadha drew attention to the advanced AI models developed by these nations, citing examples like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok from the U.S., and China’s DeepSeek. He then posed a crucial question: “Where does India stand in this era of AI?”
Chadha acknowledged India’s strength in contributing 15% of the global AI workforce, with a large number of Indian AI professionals working overseas. However, he emphasized that India has largely become a consumer of AI, rather than a producer.
Chadha stressed that AI is not just a technological advancement, but a matter of economic power, national security, and sovereignty. He urged the government to implement a clear, time-bound National AI Strategy with robust funding and institutional collaboration.
