Car Nicobar witnessed a landmark cultural development on December 12, 2025, with the laying of the foundation stone for the renovation and modernisation of the District Library Building. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Amit Kale, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Nicobar District, and Mr. Lionald Nicomede, Chairman of the Tribal Council, Car Nicobar, along with officers and representatives from various departments.
The long-awaited upgradation is being carried out with the support of the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation (RRRLF) under the National Mission on Libraries (NML), Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The project aims to expand public access to knowledge resources and align the facility with modern library standards.
Plans include improved infrastructure, digital and IT-enabled services, and upgraded public access facilities. Special emphasis will be placed on inclusive infrastructure to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities, making the library a space for all sections of society.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Commissioner highlighted that the modernised library would move beyond conventional reading spaces by offering advanced digital facilities. He also announced the creation of a Musical Arts Room—a fully soundproof audio recording facility equipped with musical instruments.
