The second phase of the Astro-Tourism Guide Training Workshop, organized by the Directorate of Information, Publicity & Tourism (IP&T) in collaboration with Open Space Foundation and C-STERC, concluded successfully at Shaheed Dweep this week. The workshop aimed to strengthen and sustain the island’s emerging astro-tourism ecosystem by equipping local participants with specialized knowledge and practical skills.
A total of 53 participants took part in the hands-on sessions, which focused on leveraging existing astro-tourism infrastructure, enhancing guide capabilities, and promoting sustainable tourism practices. The training included modules on night sky interpretation, telescope handling, visitor engagement, and safety protocols.
This phase of the workshop builds on the success of the initial training held in Sri Vijaya Puram earlier this month. Officials emphasized the importance of community involvement in promoting astro-tourism and highlighted the potential of Shaheed Dweep as a prime destination for stargazing and celestial events.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to diversify tourism offerings in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and create new livelihood opportunities for local youth. Participants expressed enthusiasm about applying their new skills and contributing to the region’s tourism development.
Further workshops and certification programs are expected to follow in other parts of the islands in the coming months.
