Anti-Narcotics Police Bust Ganja Smuggling Operation at VSI Airport; 26-Year-Old Labourer Arrested

Port Blair, October 6, 2025 — In a decisive crackdown on drug trafficking, the Anti-Narcotics Division of the Andaman & Nicobar Police apprehended a 26-year-old labourer involved in smuggling ganja at Veer Savarkar International (VSI) Airport. The arrest took place during a routine security sweep, which led to the discovery of a suspicious package concealed in the labourer’s luggage.

According to official sources, the seized contraband weighed approximately 4.5 kilograms and was intended for distribution within the island territory. The accused, whose identity has been withheld pending further investigation, was reportedly employed as a contract labourer at the airport and had attempted to bypass security protocols using his staff access.

The operation was carried out in coordination with airport security personnel and narcotics intelligence units, who had been monitoring potential trafficking routes following recent alerts. Preliminary interrogation suggests that the accused may be part of a larger network operating across coastal regions.

The seized ganja has been sent for forensic analysis, and the accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Authorities have launched a wider probe to trace the origin of the consignment and identify possible accomplices.

Senior officials praised the vigilance of the airport security team and reiterated their commitment to maintaining strict surveillance at all entry points. “We are intensifying checks and deploying additional intelligence resources to ensure that the islands remain free from narcotics,” said a spokesperson from the Anti-Narcotics Division.

The arrest has sparked renewed calls for tighter screening of airport staff and enhanced coordination between law enforcement and civil aviation authorities.
