Andaman achieved a tourism milestone with the Spice Festival of 2025, promotes sustainable agriculture

he Spice Festival–2025, which took place on 16 July in Sri Vijaya Puram, Andaman Islands, was a notable event that highlighted the islands’ spice heritage and emphasized the importance of sustainability in both tourism and agriculture. The theme, #FromSoilToSoul, served as a cultural amalgamation of food and experiences, setting a new standard for tourism in the area. The festival transcended mere spice appreciation, focusing on the integration of traditional wisdom with contemporary methods. It provided immersive experiences aimed at educating attendees about the vital role spices play in the islands’ agricultural practices and culinary traditions.

A key highlight of the event was a visit to Padma Shri Kamachi Chellammal, affectionately known as Nariyal Amma, who is celebrated for her traditional methods of spice cultivation. Attendees had the opportunity to engage directly with farmers, hear inspiring narratives, and observe firsthand the sustainable practices employed in spice cultivation. Additionally, the festival included an informative tour of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra – Central Island Agricultural Research Institute Research Centre located at Sippighat, which showcased modern agricultural techniques, spice processing, and packaging.

At the Junglee Mirchi Organic Resort in Caddlegunj, the festival provided participants with the opportunity to engage in organic farming practices. This resort, recognized for its commitment to environmentally sustainable farming, also hosted a culinary demonstration featuring indigenous spices from the islands. This blend of gastronomy and agriculture was pivotal to the festival’s overall success.
