A&N Islands Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board Organizes Awareness and Registration Camps at Campbell Bay

Campbell Bay, October 7, 2025 — In a proactive initiative aimed at improving the welfare of construction workers in remote regions, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board successfully conducted a series of awareness and registration camps at Campbell Bay, Great Nicobar.

The camps, held over multiple days, were organized to educate workers about their rights, entitlements, and the various welfare schemes available under the Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) Act. The initiative also facilitated on-the-spot registration of eligible workers, enabling them to access benefits such as health insurance, education support for children, pension schemes, and financial assistance for housing and tools.

Officials from the Labour Department, along with representatives of the Welfare Board, engaged directly with workers at construction sites and community centers. Informational sessions were conducted in local languages to ensure accessibility and understanding. Pamphlets and registration forms were distributed, and biometric verification was carried out to streamline the enrollment process.

Speaking at the event, a senior official from the Welfare Board emphasized the importance of reaching out to workers in geographically isolated areas. “Our goal is to ensure that no worker is left behind. These camps are a step toward inclusive development and social security for those who contribute to the backbone of our infrastructure,” the official stated.

Local contractors and community leaders also extended support to the initiative, encouraging workers to participate and avail themselves of the benefits. The response from the workforce was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the opportunity to register without having to travel to Port Blair or other administrative centers.

The Welfare Board plans to replicate similar camps in other remote areas of the archipelago in the coming months, reinforcing its commitment to equitable outreach and worker empowerment across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
