Amit Shah Accuses TMC of Using Illegal Immigrants as Vote Bank in West Bengal

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has leveled serious allegations against the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led West Bengal government, accusing it of attempting to register illegal immigrants as voters. Shah’s statements, made during the “Times Now Summit 2025” and within parliamentary sessions, have ignited a political firestorm, raising concerns about electoral integrity and national security.
Shah claimed that the TMC government views illegal immigrants as potential voters and has allegedly facilitated their integration by providing them with identity documents such as Aadhaar and voter cards. He highlighted that many illegal immigrants apprehended in the state were found to possess Aadhaar cards issued from districts like 24 Parganas.
The Home Minister also criticized the Bengal government for obstructing the completion of border fencing along the India-Bangladesh border. According to Shah, approximately 450 kilometers of fencing work remains incomplete due to the state’s refusal to provide land. He alleged that ruling party workers often disrupt fencing efforts through hooliganism and religious sloganeering.
Shah further asserted that the BJP, if elected to power in West Bengal in the 2026 Assembly elections, would put an end to such activities. He expressed confidence in the BJP’s ability to address the issue of illegal immigration and strengthen border security measures.
The TMC, however, has dismissed Shah’s allegations as baseless. Party representatives have accused the central government of failing to expedite border fencing projects and have denied any involvement in aiding illegal immigrants.
The debate over illegal immigration and border security continues to be a contentious issue in West Bengal, with both the central and state governments trading accusations. As the 2026 Assembly elections approach, the issue is expected to remain a focal point of political discourse in the state.
